Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the free online capital gains calculator.
It is the profit from selling an asset for more than its cost basis, which is the purchase
price plus buying and selling costs.
A loss gives a negative gain, so no tax is charged and the tool reports the loss along with a
negative return on cost.
Assets held for twelve months or more normally use the long-term rate, while shorter holdings
use the higher short-term rate.
You enter the number of months you held the asset, and the tool decides which of the two tax
rates applies to the gain.
The gain is multiplied by the rate that applies to it, and that tax figure is then subtracted
from the gain to give the net amount.
They are added to the cost basis, which reduces the taxable gain and therefore reduces the
amount of tax that is owed.
Then the return on cost cannot be calculated, so the tool shows a dash instead of a
percentage that would divide by zero.
