Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the free online volume calculator.
You can measure cubes, rectangular boxes, cylinders, cones, spheres and square based pyramids
in any units.
The volume of a rectangular box is length times width times height, so a 2 by 3 by 4 box
holds 24 cubic units.
The sphere formula is four thirds times pi times the radius cubed, so the volume grows
quickly as the radius increases.
If your measurements are in centimetres, the cubic result is also shown divided by one
thousand to give litres.
A cylinder uses pi times the radius squared times the height, which is the circular base area
stretched along the height.
A cone with the same base and height as a cylinder holds exactly one third of its volume,
which the formula reflects.
No. All volumes are worked out locally in your browser, so your measurements stay on your own
device.
Use one consistent unit throughout. Cubes of centimetres give cubic centimetres, and inches
give cubic inches.
