Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free online unicode escape converter.

Paste your text, keep the direction on text to escapes and choose a style. The escaped result appears immediately below the controls.
The converter writes and reads escapes of the form backslash u plus four hex digits, backslash x plus two hex digits, and code point escapes.
A code point is the number Unicode gives to a character. For example the letter A is U+0041 and the euro sign is U+20AC.
Emoji sit above U+FFFF, so they are written as a surrogate pair of two escapes and rebuilt into one character when decoded.
Escape sequences work on UTF-16 code units, and characters above the basic plane need two units, which is why a single emoji gives two escapes.
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser, so the text and the escapes you paste never leave your device.
Yes. The lower box lists every character with its code point in hexadecimal and in decimal, one character per line.
An escape the tool does not recognise is left exactly as it is, so you can safely mix plain text, valid escapes and stray backslashes.
