Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free online snowflake id generator.

A snowflake id is a 64 bit number that packs a millisecond timestamp, a machine id and a per machine sequence into one value.
The top 41 bits hold milliseconds since your epoch, the next 10 bits hold the machine id and the last 12 bits hold the sequence.
Because the timestamp is the most significant part of the number, so a plain numeric sort follows creation order.
Up to 4096 ids per millisecond, because the sequence field is 12 bits wide and then rolls back to zero.
Any fixed millisecond value you choose, such as 1288834974657. A later epoch keeps the ids smaller for longer.
Yes. Paste the id and click Decode to see the timestamp, the machine id and the sequence it contains.
A real system must wait or raise an error, because a backwards clock can repeat ids. This tool simply uses the current time.
No. Every id is built in your browser, and in a real system each worker only needs its own machine id.
Yes. The generator is free, unlimited and works on any modern browser.
