Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free online ideal weight calculator.

There is no single best one. Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi were derived for different purposes, so showing all four is more useful.
Devine starts at fifty kilograms for a man of five feet and adds 2.3 kilograms for each extra inch of height.
Hamwi uses 48 kilograms at five feet for men and 45.5 kilograms for women, then adds a set amount for every extra inch.
It covers a body mass index from 18.5 to 24.9, which most health bodies treat as the healthy band for adults.
Each was derived from a different population and dataset, so differences of a few kilograms between them are normal and expected.
These formulas do not use age. Older adults often sit slightly above the range, so discuss what suits you with a clinician.
Not well. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can be perfectly healthy well above the calculated range.
Enter your height in centimetres. Multiply feet by 30.48 and add 2.54 for each extra inch to convert your height.
No. The figures are estimates for general information only and are not medical advice, so your doctor is the right guide.
