Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free online base58 encoder.

Base58 is used by Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for addresses and keys, because it drops characters that look alike when printed or read aloud.
Base58 packs more bits into every character than base32 does, so the same bytes produce a shorter string, while still avoiding confusing characters.
The digits zero and capital O are removed, along with capital I and lowercase l. That leaves 58 characters that are hard to mix up.
Every leading zero byte becomes a leading 1, and decoding turns those leading 1 characters back into zero bytes, so the value round-trips exactly.
You can decode the text of an address, but the result is raw bytes. Checksums are not verified, so this is a converter rather than a wallet tool.
