Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the free online audio metadata viewer.
Choose the file and the tool parses its header, ID3 tags and RIFF INFO chunks, then lists the
format, quality figures and tag values.
Title, artist, album, album artist, year, genre, track, composer, comment, encoder and
publisher where the file stores them.
ID3v2 sits at the start of the file and supports long text in many encodings, while ID3v1 is
a fixed 128 byte block at the end with short fields.
MP3 and other lossy formats store no bit depth because the audio is compressed. Only formats
such as WAV and FLAC state one.
The tool reads the container signature and, for MPEG audio, walks the frame header bits to
identify the version, layer, bitrate and sample rate.
A copied duration from the header can differ from the decoded length by a fraction of a
second, so both figures are shown when available.
It recognises the FLAC and Ogg signatures and reports the codec, but full Vorbis comment
parsing is limited to the common cases.
No. The file is read with the File API and parsed inside your browser; only the tool page
itself is downloaded.
Yes, it is free with no account, no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you
